The snow is still melting but I have summer on my mind. I love summer time and it is not only because of the weather. I love the longer evenings and the time we get to spend as a family. My planning kicks in and the list of family activities I want to do starts to grow! If you are like me you are ready for summer too! I like to do a little planning ahead to get myself organized for our busy summer by sticking to this essential list for an epic family fun summer. With a little planning you can get it all done and relax with your family during this busy season.
When the kids were little summer was all about playing in the backyard and afternoon naps. Now naptimes are long gone and we are on the go a lot more. We go from their summer activities to community events to spending the day as a family. It’s busy, but the fun kind of busy that creates awesome moments for your family. Take the time to do these 3 easy steps and have the best summer ever.
Set Up Your Summer Calendar
Lessons, Activities, & Family Events
Take an hour to fill in your calendar. I’m a pencil and paper kind of girl when it comes to scheduling but you might do this electronically. I write in all the obligations we have. This includes the kids swimming lessons, family reunions/birthday parties, soccer/baseball schedules, and any other activities we have signed up for and are required to attend. I also do a search for local events in my town like outdoor movies or parades and add them to the calendar.
Schedule in Family Days
Are you going on a family vacation? A weekend getaway? Pencil them in your calendar now. Even if you haven’t’ booked them yet! Write in your family time. If you have a day trip that you never had a chance to do add it on the calendar. Make it part of the summer plans. We love planning Mystery Days and I always schedule them a few months ahead. This makes your family time as much of a priority as everything else. Read about how I started Mystery Days and how you can use them to connect with your family.
Prioritize Your Time
Your kids are only little once and time goes so quickly. Don’t overschedule your summer. Give your family time to walk along the beach and collect seashells. Take a walk after dinner and watch the stars. Plan a family activity night and create something. Sometimes the best moments are when you slow down and enjoy the quiet of being together.

Prep the Car
We are on the go so much in the summer that I always go through the car and get it summer ready. Start off by doing a big spring cleaning of the car. It is much better to get organized when the car is clean. I like to use a bag or car organizing basket to keep things together. Stock the car with great snacks too! I like to pack Goldfish because my kids love them. They are easy to bring in the car and they have lots of varieties. Having Goldfish in the car makes it easy for my family to be on the go and off on our next adventure.
My Car Prep List:
- Paper Towels
- Baby Wipes
- Bug Spray
- Small Cooler for Water Bottles-I refill it on the days we are going out.
- Snacks: Goldfish, etc. Keep snacks that will stay fresh in the car.
- Flip Flops/Sneakers
- Soccer Ball, Frisbee, etc.
- Coloring Books/Crayons/Pencil
Live Your Family Bucket List
In our house we have an ever growing family bucket list. I am always finding new adventures near and far that I want to do. Get together as a family and do a little brainstorming. This does not have to be a huge cross-country vacation. Think about being a tourist in your own town. Plan a day visiting a local museum that you’ve always wanted to visit but never had the time.
I have this big dream of visiting all 50 states. We started last summer and I am adding a few more states to the itinerary this year. Your family adventure will be different then mine. Summer is all about family time together. Do you prefer to stay closer to home? There are so many great ideas out there to plan fun family activities in your own backyard.
Every summer, usually at the end of April, I do these 3 easy steps. It has made summer organized and has given me more time with my family to relax and enjoy them. Summer to me is all about creating the family memories the stay with you throughout the year.
